Developers Needed
Web Application Developers Required
JGP is a company that develops software solutions for recruitment - we are best known for www.jobsgopublic.com, the UK’s leading jobs board for the public, third and not for profit sectors. Less well known, but a key part of our future strategy, is the provision of software solutions for skills development and all aspects of the recruitment process.
Note: We are not accepting applications from agencies at the moment.
We’re currently looking for two developers. You’ll work in a small team developing applications using Ruby on Rails. Experience with Ruby on Rails would be good, but we’re more interested in seeing that you’ve had extensive commercial web development experience using a variety of languages and can adapt to new technologies as they emerge.
We are about to embark on a new development phase, hence this recruitment campaign, and you will be in at the start of that, contributing to all phases of the development process. iMacs are standard issue for developers here, and you can expect us to contribute to improving your knowledge and skills with conferences and training.
To fit in, you will probably:
- Be enthusiastic about doing things right and doing the right things
- Be a thinker
- Be self-motivated
- Care about producing quality code that keeps both customers and other coders happy
- Be slightly obsessive compulsive when it comes to detail
- Like sharing knowledge with the rest of the team
To be considered, you will need:
- Experience developing web applications.
- Some experience of Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
- An understanding of Object Oriented development.
- Experience using (X)HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Experience using SQL and relational database systems.
- Capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
- Excellent communication skills (it’s a small team, you won’t be able to sit in the dark coding by yourself all day).
- Fluent spoken and written English.
- Based in or near London.
Ideally, you should be able to tick some of these boxes too:
- 2+ years commercial experience developing web applications.
- Experience with web application frameworks and user-interface libraries (prototype/scriptaculous, Jquery etc.).
- Commercial experience using Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
- Experience with multiple programming languages.
- Experience working with a team of developers, and producing maintainable code
- Experience of the Agile approach, and in particular end-to-end responsibility for delivering solutions.
- Experience of some flavour of Test Driven Development / BDD.
- Solid understanding of user-interface design principles.
- Experience working with large codebases.
- System administration (Linux).
- DBMS administration/optimisation (our DBMS of choice is MySQL).
- NOSQL data stores (we’re finding uses for MongoDB).
- Experience using source control systems (we are sold on git and github).
Although not absolutely essential, we generally expect that you will have some third level educational qualification (e.g. a degree) in software development. If you haven’t, we’ll just expect you to be able to prove that you really know your stuff.
To apply, send your CV to recruitment@jgp.co.uk along with details of any projects you have on GitHub, your blog and anything else you think will make you stand out from the rest.
